Is a Mini Herb Garden For You?

Do you want to create your own herb garden but do not like the idea of hard work? Smile, because I have just the right solution for you – a mini herb garden in the size that you prefer!

First of all you may discover that maintaining an average size garden may not be hard work as in hard labour that one would baulk at. Think of it more like playing squash – hard work that you enjoy. And that is the way allotments owners feel. So having a garden may just mean not having to go to the gym. I think that’s cool because gardening gives the added benefit of a harvest of herbs in the end, in addition to the exercise bit.

But what if you can proportionately reduce the amount of maintenance required to a minimum? Would you then embark on creating your own garden of choice now?

Well today I want to introduce you to the mini herb garden.

But be fore-warned that the herbs you will be harvesting may just lead you into an adventure to explore the different cuisines from around the world. At the very least, you could be sipping relaxing chamomile tea on some mildly humid evening in the garden with that someone special, or to strip away all the stress from work. Some of the herbs from your mini herb garden may even make your life more comfortable by relieving some ailment that might be bugging you. As a former insomniac, I know what it means to be able to take a few drops of valerian tincture to help me go to sleep.

Now many people argue that the only true mini herb garden still has to be the one in the ground outside your house but I am of the opinion that the following are mini herb gardens that you may consider growing. Your final choice may depend on:

1. The amount of space you have available, indoors or outdoors.

2. Whether you want to have the convenience of the plants being actually in the house (meaning you do not have to go outside in the wind or rain to pick your herbs)

3. Whether you actually physically enjoy being in your own aromatic garden where you can sit and smell the aromas of your plants.

4. The conditions of the actual spot you are contemplating – like how much sun it receives, the type of soil on the ground and if it will get enough water naturally.

5. Whether you prefer to be able to control your garden environment so that you have crops to pick most year round.

And so on.

The type of mini herb garden you finally decide on will also depend on how much time you are willing to joyfully spend in it. So you may for example choose an herb garden kit because maintaining it will require the least amount of effort.

To my mind a mini herb garden can be any one of the following:

1. What some people would say is the true mini herb garden in a four by six foot plot of ground, whether it is in your backyard or on the rooftop!

2. A one-pot mini herb garden. This is a specially made ceramic pot that has “holes” located all around it from top to bottom into which you would put your young herb plants as you fill the pot up with your growing media of a suitable soil mix.

3. A flourishing garden contained in a herb garden kit

4. A mini herb garden can also be that container of herbs that sits on your windowsill or in individual pots arranged on a stepped bench beside it. I have seen decorative metal structures that have pot holders that branch out from the main central “pole”. These arrangements can be set beside the windowsill so long as it does not obstruct traffic flow.

5. An arrangement made up of herbs contained in individual pots in some area in the house, usually the kitchen, can also be construed to be an indoors mini herb garden.

6. It may also be an arrangement of a number of smaller herb plants in a large bowl much like a flower or plant arrangement that is displayed for decorative purposes. Like in a flower arrangement, the bowl or container used is entirely up to your imagination.

7. It may also be that outdoor area on your patio where you have placed several potted herb plants.

The actual herbs that you decide to grow will depend very much on the type of garden you have chosen to build.

Why not take your time and enjoy every process of creating your own mini herb garden, from the planning and designing stage down to when you experiment with your crops in your kitchen. Do not hurry because every stage of this new hobby can be a great adventure in itself.

How To Maintain and Restore Laminate Floors

Laminate floors give a different look to your home or office. These floors are durable and resistant to stains. If you use the proper laminate cleaning products and methods, they can be cleaned and maintained easily.

Here are some general floor cleaning tips for these types of floors:

Sweeping:

Sweep the laminated floors daily with a soft-bristled broom. That will prevent the scratches.

Vacuum Cleaning:

It is convenient and important to vacuum clean the laminate flooring frequently to remove loose dust and dirt. The dust has abrasives that can cause scratches.

Wet Mopping:

A damp mopping is recommended to clean the laminate floors once in a week or less. You can use a soft microfiber mop. Always mop along the lines of the floor planks. Dry and clean the floor with soft microfiber mops. Make sure to only use a damp mop as water can harm the laminated floors. It is recommended to only use the recommended laminate cleaning products to clean your the floors.

Things to Avoid:

You should not use wax, polish, or a vegetable oil based product, scouring powder, abrasive pads or steel wool to polish or clean a laminate floor. These products will damage the floor surface. Also, avoid use of cleaning agents such as vinegar, ammonia or chlorinated solutions for cleaning the floors. Vinegar is an acid. Each time you use, it will eat away the surface, make it dull and remove the top protective layer. Same way, ammonia and chlorine will damage the top layer of floors. Do not wash or wet mop the floor with soap, detergent and water. This can cause warping, swelling, delamination and opening up of the joints and gaps.

Cleaning Liquid Spill and Stains:

If any liquid is spilled on the floor surface, it must be immediately cleaned. It can stain the floor or enter the seams. Use a soft cloth or paper towel to soak and wipe up the spill. Clean the spot with a damp cloth using laminate stain cleaner. A neutral cleaner, nail polish remover, or acetone can remove oil, a permanent marker, or a paint stain.

You can use warm water with or without a neutral cleaner for wiping off stains from juice, beer, sauce, tea, coffee or sauce. It is better to use a Deep cleaner meant for laminate type floors. Substances such as chewing gum or wax should be first solidified with ice and then carefully rubbed off. You can clean the spot with warm water or a Deep cleaner. However, water should be used only when the laminated flooring is sealed.

Using Proper Laminate Cleaning Products:

The floors are not sealed particularly at the seams. Using the moist mops or washing with water can cause moisture to enter the laminate and damage it. It is advisable to use the correct laminate cleaning products recommended by the manufacturers of your flooring.

There are various products like Deep cleaners, Cleaners, and Restoration products from renowned manufacturers. These products are specially manufactured for the laminated floors.

The regular cleaner can be used periodically after sweeping and vacuuming to mop the floor and remove the dirt, grime and footmarks and make it shine using a microfiber mop. It will not leave behind any residue or streaks.

You can use the Deep Cleaner, if your laminated floor has become stained and very dirty. The instructions for use of laminate cleaning products are provided with them.

Restoration:

As the laminated floor becomes older, it has scuff, scratch and wear marks on it. You may like to restore it to increase its shine and provide it extra moisture protection. You need to clean and apply a Restoration product to maintain the floor.

You can clean your floor with a Deep Cleaner to remove the dirt, residue, grime, oils, etc. Next, clean it with the regular cleaner using a microfiber pad so that the floor surface is perfectly cleaned and you can apply a Restoration coating to it. The Restoration coating will fill scuffs and scratches and hide them. It will also protect seams and joints from water damage and remove the footprints. Using the right laminate cleaning products will protect your laminated floors and keep them in a good condition.

Why More Power Distribution Companies Are Opting For Prepaid Electricity Meters

We are increasingly witnessing a trend where more and more power distribution companies are opting to put their customers in the electricity supply programs. These are usually run through prepaid electricity meters, where users buy vouchers worth given amounts of money which, when keyed into the prepaid meters, afford them given numbers of electricity units. You know how much of a trend this is when you consider the number of electricity meters that are being purchased on a daily basis. A look at the number of companies that are emerging, with the manufacture and distribution of such prepaid electricity meters as their core business confirms the extent to which the meters are in demand. Of course, most of these meters are not purchased by individuals, but rather by electricity distribution companies, which proceed to sell and install them for their customers. It is beyond the powers of the individual electricity user to decide that they want to switch to the prepaid electricity distribution system. Rather, it is the electricity company which makes such an option available to its customers.

All that, then, brings us to the question as to why more of the power distribution companies are opting for such prepaid electricity meter over the traditional postpaid electricity meters which served them so well for many years. And as it turns out, a number of factors can be seen as being behind the situation where more and more of the power distribution companies are opting for these prepaid electricity meters.

First is the fact that it is generally more convenient to run a electricity billing system than it is to run a postpaid electricity billing system. In fact, in terms of convenience, when you come to think of it, the two systems are simply incomparable. The postpaid system more often than not involves manual meter reading, followed by bill calculation from the meter readings (which is usually a very involving exercise), which is in turn followed by the sending of the bills to the electricity users, and the collection of payments from the users. One can’t even start to compare the two systems in terms of convenience to run; hence the open partiality that the power distribution companies are showing to the prepaid system.

There are also the cost considerations, which strongly suggest that the electricity distribution system is much cheaper to run, on the whole, than the postpaid system. Here, we are looking at a system which does not make use of meter readers, rates collectors or – as is often necessary – attorneys to pursue legal action against defaulters.

Then there is the fact that the electricity users seem to have a preference for the electricity systems. This preference is informed by, among others, the fact that the prepaid electricity system gives them more control over their electricity system and it is, on the whole, more convenient than the traditional postpaid system. So even the electricity companies which may not particularly like the prepaid meters still find themselves having to work out a prepaid electricity system, due to customer demand.
